Scholarships

Texas CPAs and accounting organizations provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to students pursuing accounting degrees. The following is a list of some of those scholarships:

Name: Undergraduate Scholarship

Sponsor: Texas Society of CPAs Accounting Education Foundation

The Accounting Education Foundation of TSCPA has established a program to provide scholarship assistant to accounting students who plan to become Texas Certified Public Accountants and enter the accounting profession.

To be considered for a TSCPA scholarship, a student must:

  • Attend a college or university which participates in Accounting Education Foundation    programs and be nominated by the chairperson of the accounting department of the     university.
  • Have satisfactorily completed at least 110 semester credit hours of college-level courses by August 31.  A recipient will normally be classified as a 5th year student or graduate student in the fall semester or quarter.
  • Be an accounting major with the intent of becoming a Texas Certified Public Accountant and entering the accounting profession upon graduation.  The student is expected to be enrolled as a full-time college student (at least 12 semester credit hours each semester for undergraduate students/at least 9 semester credit hours each semester for graduate students).
  • File an Application of Intent to sit for the CPA Exam with the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy.
  • Have an Accounting GPA of 3.6 or more on a 4.0 scale.
  • Have completed 21 semester credit hours of accounting courses required of accounting majors with a grade of B or better in each course by August 31.
  • Submit an official cumulative college transcript through the end of summer of the current academic school year to include semester or quarter hours earned and cumulative GPA.  If the applicant has attended more than one university, the cumulative college transcript should show grades and credit received for all previous schools.  If such transcript does not show a previous record, then a separate transcript (or transcripts) will be required.

Amount: $2,500 for the academic year.

Name: Austin CPA Chapter Scholarship
Sponsor: Austin CPA Chapter CPE Foundation

Recipient: Be a current TSCPA Student member. Be a junior or senior accounting major or a graduate student in accounting attending a university in the Austin Chapter Area, or a student of Austin Community College’s Professional Accountant, Advanced Technical Certificate Program, with the intent of becoming a Certified Public Accountant and entering the accounting profession upon graduation.

Name: Dallas CPA Society Scholarship

The Dallas CPA Society promotes accounting as a career choice.  An important component of this mission is to provide financial support to junior, senior and graduate accounting students at local universities who plan to become CPAs. The Dallas CPA Society and Philip Vogel and Company, P.C. established a scholarship program in memory of Philip Vogel, CPA. The purpose of the program is to provide scholarship assistance to accounting students who plan to enter the accounting profession. To be considered for a scholarship, a student must:

  • Attend one of the following Dallas area colleges or universities: Southern Methodist University, Texas A&M-Commerce, University of North Texas, or the University of Texas at Dallas. 
  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Be a junior or senior accounting major, or a graduate student in accounting, with a minimum of 15 accounting credit hours.
  • Applicants must have the intent of becoming a Certified Public Accountant and entering the accounting profession upon graduation.
  •  Applicants may be full-time or part-time students.
  • Have a minimum accounting GPA of 3.5.

Name: Undergraduate or Graduate Scholarships
Sponsor: Houston CPA Society, a Chapter of the Texas Society of CPAs

Recipient: The Houston CPA Society has established a program to provide scholarship assistance to undergraduate and graduate accounting students who shall have applied for Intent to Sit for the CPA Exam to become   Texas Certified Public Accountants and enter the accounting profession. The deadline for receiving applications and all supporting documents may vary, but the individual universities must submit their candidate to the Houston CPA Society by March 1. Awards will be made during May and the funds will be sent to the school for disbursement to the student. To be considered for a Houston CPA Society scholarship, a student must:

  • Attend one of the eight colleges or universities in the 13 counties within the Houston CPA Society’s boundaries and apply through the university’s accounting department or studen aid office, as directed by that college.
  • A recipient will have earned sufficient hours to be classified as a college junior or above by the start of the fall semester or quarter following the award.
  • Be an accounting major or in an accounting program at the Master’s level and have applied for Intent to Sit for the CPA Exam to become  a Texas Certified Public Accountant and entering the accounting profession upon graduation. The student is expected to be enrolled as a full-time college student (at least 12 semester credit hours each semester if an undergraduate; 9 semester credit hours if a graduate student; or taking a reduced course load while in an internship program of at least 20 hours per week doing accounting related work).
  • Have a minimum cumulative college GPA of 3.25 in accounting and 3.0 in total or more on a 4.0 scale.

For consideration, an accounting student should contact the accounting department chairperson if attending one of the following schools: University of Houston – Main Campus, University of Houston – Downtown, University of Houston – Clear Lake, St. Thomas University, Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern University, Sam Houston State University and Houston Baptist University.
Amount: Up to $3,500 per academic year.

Student Auxiliary Scholarship

Sponsor: Houston CPA Society, A Chapter of the Texas Society of CPAs – Accounting Career Education Committee

Recipient:

  • Be a current Houston CPA Society Student Auxiliary member.

Information: A perpetual scholarship, established by the partners of local accounting firm Armstrong Backus and Co., to be awarded to an Angelo State graduate student with a minimum of 120 hours and a grade point average of no less than 3.0 and who is majoring in accounting with the intention of becoming a CPA. Name: Talbert Family Memorial Accounting & Financial Management Scholarship

In memory of William Laurel Talbert and his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Milam O. Talbert and grandparents, Laurel and Rena Talbert. The Talbert family farmed in the Robstown area from 1913 into the 1960s. William L. Talbert was a CPA who applied modern accounting principles to the family farm and eventually became a professor of accounting.

Amount: $2,000/several available (This scholarship is renewable for one additional year.)

Eligibility: Applicants must: graduate from a Coastal Bend high school; major in accounting or financial management at an accredited Texas college or university; be at least a college sophomore or graduate student; attend college full time (at least 12 hrs per semester for undergraduates; 9 semester hrs for graduate students); maintain a 3.25 GPA; demonstrate financial need; maintain a permanent address in Aransas, Bee, Jim Wells, Kleberg, Nueces, Refugio, or San Patricio county.

Name: Texas A&M University-Kingsville M.P.A. Scholarships

Recipient: New graduate students in the Master of Professional Accountancy degree program residing in the South Texas region.
Must have an undergraduate degree in Accounting or equivalent course work in Accounting with 3.0 overall GPA and 3.25 in Accounting. See information link below for complete information and application form.
