How I Got Here and What’s Ahead

Aaron HeadshotBlogger: Aaron Blankenship

Hey everybody! My name is Aaron Blankenship and I am a graduate student at The University of Texas at Dallas. I am very excited to share my experience with everyone this year as I get ready to take the CPA exam.

I was born in Moss Bluff, Louisiana but grew up in Katy, Texas. I took an accounting elective in high school, but I had no idea at the time that it would be my future career choice. I did not know anyone who was an accountant and I didn’t know a whole lot about what accountants do. When I came to UTD I picked accounting as my major because I had an interest in finance, economics, and organizational behavior. Little did I know that accounting would offer a little bit of each, as well as a lot more! I fell in love with accounting when I took Intro to Financial Accounting my freshman year. It was during my sophomore year that I decided I was going to pursue a career in external auditing.

While at UTD I have had the pleasure of being involved in numerous student organizations on campus. I am a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity, Beta Alpha Psi, and the Professional Program in Accounting. These organizations have enriched my experience here at UTD, and I would highly recommend to any student to get involved in organizations that suit your career and non-career related interests.

I’ve had the opportunity to have two internships during my undergraduate years at UTD. One of these internships was with the public accounting firm BKD in Dallas, who will soon be my full-time employer. Having the opportunity to work a busy season with Dallas professionals before graduation was an amazing experience, and I can’t wait to begin the next part of my professional life once I pass the CPA exam. My advice to new students is to look for internship opportunities early. Any experience is good experience and it is a great way to gauge what area of accounting interests you.

Looking forward, I’m excited to see what my final year at UTD has to offer! I’ll be blogging about these experiences as the year goes on.

~Aaron
